2008 hyundai tucson review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Versatile, economical alternative to cr-v. introductionthe hyundai tucson is the korean automaker's smallest, entry-level suv. Its most obvious competitor is the honda cr-v. Like the cr-v, the hyundai tucson is strictly a five-seater, with no third-row-seating option. It's easy to get in and out of the front and back seats, and the rear seatbacks flip down easily. There's a decent amount of cargo space available. we like its looks. It's nicely proportioned, with clean lines and short overhangs front and rear. On wet pavement, 4wd tucsons don't spin their front tires the way the front-drive models do when accelerating from a stop. In snow, they benefit from an all-wheel-drive system that directs power to the rear wheels as road conditions change. A switch allows the driver to lock in a 50/50 torque split when creeping through drifting snow. Though not intended to be a highly capable off-road vehicle, the tucson can certainly manage rocky dirt two-tracks and other light off-highway duties. for the 2008 model year, hyundai has made a six-disc cd changer standard with limited trim, and replaced the gray leather interior with black. Late-production 2008 tucson models come standard with xm satellite radio (including three months of free service), an auxiliary audio input jack, active front head restraints, and a tire-pressure monitor. Power and associates initial quality study named tucson the industry's highest quality all-new model when it was launched in 2005; and rated it highest in initial quality in the compact multi-activity vehicle segment in 2006. a comprehensive list of active and passive safety features are standard equipment, including six airbags and electronic stability control. The comparison was not necessarily in the santa fe's favor; if tucson was a bit stubby, it was not nearly so quirky, with taut sides and business-like fender flares in place of santa fe's oddly undulating flanks. then, for 2007, santa fe went all sleek and sophisticated, chasing after the same up-level crossover look recently adopted by the toyota rav4 and honda cr-v. That leaves tucson, by default, more distinctive-looking; the last of the cute-utes. the size difference between the two siblings has grown as well. Where before tucson was just about 7 inches shorter overall than santa fe, on a wheelbase that was actually a half-inch longer; now tucson is shorter by almost 3 inches in wheelbase and close to 14 inches overall. But remember that's because santa fe has grown, while tucson remains the same size it always was. the tucson has clean lines with a relatively big grille up front and headlamps that blend in well with the hood line and edges of the fenders. The front bumper is a large one-piece molding that begins just below the grille, houses three large air openings and two fog lights (on models that have them) and then forms a spoiler at the bottom. Yet in profile this impressive piece of plastic barely protrudes in front of the grille opening. At the back, the outer edges of the rear bumper reaches up to the tail lights; this bumper sticks out a few inches, adding protection. tucson's rear tailgate slopes forward, avoiding the van-like vertical look of many other small suvs. The rear window can be opened separately from the main tailgate, although it is not very big, making it ineffective for loading much more than small light stuff. the se comes with lower body cladding that runs from the front bumper, around the fenders and along the lower edges of the doors, to the rear bumper. Finished in gray, the cladding is not too obtrusive. Limited features a monochromatic look, with body-color cladding as well as the same body-color mirrors and door handles as the se. all models come with 16-inch alloy wheels; although the wheels on se and limited are more intricately styled. Roof rack side rails and tinted windows are also standard on all models. even though tucson is not intended for serious off-road driving, it does have relatively short front and rear overhangs for clearance through gulleys and over obstacles. This is largely thanks to the tucson's long wheelbase, fractionally longer than that of the honda cr-v or ford escape, even though both of those vehicles are several inches longer overall. Tucson's longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs is a sign of superior design. The tucson also has a relatively wide track, which helps improve its stability. interiorthere's nothing cheap or spartan about the interior of the hyundai tucson, although it won't be mistaken for a luxury vehicle. Trim accents are matte black in the gls and metalgrain in se and limited. This feature is highly recommended by safety organizations such as the iihs. big radio and climate controls are mounted reasonably high for easy reach, as is the shift lever. The instrument pod contains three gauges with a decent-sized speedometer in the center and a smaller tachometer and fuel gauge off to the sides. In addition there are a couple of cupholders in the center console. It's also nice to see a proper parking brake lever in the center instead of a pedal-operated parking brake. There are no fewer than three 12-volt power outlets; apart from the usual one at the front there is one in the rear cargo area and one at the back of the center console for use by the rear seat passengers. The rear armrest also includes a cupholder that can accommodate a juice box. thanks again to tucson's long wheelbase, ingress to and egress from the rear seats is good. Six airbags (front, seat-mounted side-impact, and side-curtain) are standard on all models; antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution are optional on the sedan and standard on the sporty se coupe. The accent and the related kia rio are among the least expensive cars on the market with these important safety features. hyundai last redesigned the accent sedan for 2006, and released the latest coupe that spring. While the sedan brings some suave to the entry-level family segment, the coupe is clearly seeking street cred, offering hip accessories ranging from a strut-tower brace to faux carbon-fiber trim. new for 2008, all audio systems include xm satellite radio with a three-month subscription, and an auxiliary audio input jack. There's a new instrument cluster available, and a new alloy wheel design for sedans. 2008 accent se coupes come with a b&m sport shifter, plus a rear center armrest with cupholders, and coupes are now available in mellow yellow. we think people in the market for small, practical, but hardly spartan car should consider the hyundai accent alongside the best from the japanese name brands. The sedan's popular equipment package 950) adds anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, power windows with driver's express-down, power mirrors, power door locks, remote keyless entry, and an alarm with panic alert. New for 2008 is a tire-pressure monitor system that comes standard. walkaroundfar from cheap or plain, the hyundai accent looks elegant and substantial. The look starts at the front with integrated 5-mph bumpers and large aerodynamic headlight enclosures that wrap around the front fenders. Accent has a high roofline defined on either side by black rubber rain gutters, while the windshield blends into the front of the roof without any visible trim. A sharp character line originates just behind the front wheel opening and slashes boldly across the doors, fading again just short of the taillights. the back of the sedan roof sweeps toward the trailing edge of the trunk lid, giving it almost a coupe-like appearance. Unlike many modern cars, accent has a generous greenhouse with big windows; blacked-out trim both defines and unifies the side-window opening. We see a hint of volvo in accent's nose and maybe a dash of honda in its rear three-quarter view. the accent coupe has a look all its own, though it shares its front fenders and defining character line with the sedan. The differences begin with a more aggressive two-slot air opening that replaces the sedan's fine-lined horizontal grille, and ends with a rounded tail that takes the tentative reverse curve at the base of the sedan's roof, boldly widens it, and fuses it with the horizontally curving quarter panel. The two-door accent is unashamedly a hatchback, and makes no pretense to a separate trunk lid. not surprisingly, then, the coupe is as tall and wide as the sedan, and shares the sedan's 98. 4-inch wheelbase, but at 159. 3 inches overall it dispenses with a significant 9. 2 inches of the sedan's rear overhang. Not only do those big windows provide a great view, but the hip point of the driver's seat is two inches higher than in pre-2006 accents, for a truly commanding perspective. Accent cabins feature a conservative two-tone color scheme reminiscent of larger cars, and are trimmed out quite nicely, helping avoid the feeling of an econobox. the dashboard wraps around to the door panels, and the center stack is nicely integrated, with large, well-positioned climate control knobs. Smaller fuel and coolant temperature gauges are set inside, along with a small lcd readout for the odometer and trip meter as well as gear-selection indicator for automatics. Among them: dampened grab handles, a thick roof lining, center folding front and rear armrests, a tilt steering wheel, a micro roof-mounted antenna, driver and passenger side-illuminated vanity mirrors, cabin air filtration, remote trunk and fuel cap releases, and a windshield shade band. There are decent-size pockets with a cup holder in each door. In addition, there are other storage places and a big glovebox. the rear seat splits 60/40 for additional storage capacity. For better rearward visibility, the three rear-seat headrests slide down shingle-style into the seatback when not needed. A fold out center armrest with two cupholders is provided for rear-seat passengers. rear-seat leg room and headroom is not too bad unless the car is full of six-footers. Getting into the back seats is made easier by locating the rear wheels farther back, so the wheelwell does not intrude into the sedan's door opening as much. compared to the sedan, the coupe surrenders less than a half inch of hip room up front, and less than an inch in the rear; otherwise it. That could prove to be a disadvantage in, say, the paris-to-dakar rally; or while outmaneuvering an unwanted military incursion. But in most ways it's better for everyday driving. Compared to a truck-based suv, a car-based crossover is generally lighter, smoother riding, and more responsive. Crossovers also tend to use less gas than truck-based suvs. Still, with the right options, the santa fe can tow up to 3500 pounds. the 2008 santa fe looks fresh, shapely and attractive. Completely redesigned for 2007, it shed the quirky lumpiness of the pre-2007 models. It's a little bigger than previously, and comes in five- and seven-passenger versions. Some would say it looks like a smaller version of the volkswagen touareg, which is not a bad comparison. the most noticeable attribute of the santa fe's front end is the complete absence of a bumper. Instead the front valence curves around from beneath the body to encompass the large grille and wrap around headlights. The hood slopes up toward the raked windshield, and the wedge shape continues along the lower edges of the side windows that sweep up dramatically toward the tailgate. even the rear has distinctively curved lines, with high taillight clusters that are partially mounted on the main body and the tailgate. The easy to see and easy to grab tailgate handle is definitely a santa fe design cue. although the current santa fe is slightly larger than the previous model, it looks smaller because its styling is more refined and less truck-like. interiorpleasing is the best way to describe the interior of the hyundai santa fe because it's trimmed in modern plastics with a soft-touch feel.
