2012 ford focus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, next-generation models are smooth and quiet. introductiontotally redesigned, the 2012 ford focus looks, feels, and smells like the future. It makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in the compact car class, a crowded and competitive field full of good cars with base prices in the $16,000-$17,000 range: volkswagen jetta, chevrolet cruze, honda civic, toyota corolla, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte. but the focus is a mixed bag of function. The new 2. 0-liter engine is super smooth, but the new 6-speed automatic transmission shifts at quirky times. The fabric seats are super, the interior materials excellent and the wraparound cockpit cozy, but there isn't much rear legroom. focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. It's lower, longer and wider. The new focus hatchback model is especially aerodynamic looking. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission. The engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, an increase over last year's engine. It's plenty powerful, but mostly, it's extremely smooth. That's what a driver will feel: 'man, this car is smoooth.' we observed fuel economy in the mid-20s when we were driving the focus. Fuel economy figures from the u. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it is designed that way, but that doesn't mean it works that way. We struggled with it. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford in their best metaphor yet. sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps are nice and safe and volvo-like. the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs. the all-new focus chassis is 30 percent stiffer. It uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorford has been very ambitious the last few years, engineering-wise, and it shows. It shows in the interior of the focus. It's as if they took everything on their to-do list, and stuffed it in the cockpit. It's as busy as they are. but ambition is good. Because ford went all-out with the new focus interior, there are some great things, starting with the standard seats in sturdy fabric, and the leather-like seats in the sel. Too bad the new chevrolet cruze doesn't have seats like the focus; if its interior matched its great handling and engine, there might be a good gm-ford battle in an important segment. Oh, it's good anyhow. the word cockpit when used with a car is an awkward fit. But not with the focus. That was the way it was designed, to feel like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, geeks will love it, drivin' down the highway feelin' like a pilot, all those switches right nearby, led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors to suit his or her mood, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the centerstack, displays to set and adjust with dials and buttons, readouts to read and scroll through, maps to follow, touch-screens to touch, voi. 2008 ford focus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Developed with microsoft, sync provides a hands-free link to cell phones and mp3 players through a series of voice commands. It can even read text messages to occupants through the stereo system. It's an amazing system and ford appears to be ahead of everyone else in this area. the redesigned interior is aesthetically pleasing. It looks better than that of the outgoing model, with nicer graining on the plastics that continue to dominate the cockpit. The ambience is not luxurious but appropriate for the price. While interior noise is also down from the last model, there is still plenty of road and engine noise, which are typical of economy cars. as in the past, the focus handles well. We experienced lots of road feel with little body lean in corners while driving the top-line ses with its a sportier suspension. That road feel can make the ride a bit harder than some might prefer, but it isn't harsh and we appreciated the handling response. with 140 horsepower, the focus has decent power for most needs, but passing on a busy two-lane road will require a lot of space. Options for s include cruise control 215), sirius satellite radio 195), and a temporary spare tire 60). the se coupe 15,075) and sedan 15,375) add power windows, locks and mirrors; remote keyless entry; vehicle message center; and aluminum alloy wheels. Leather upholstery 695) is optional, and the ses is available with the se options. safety features that come standard consist of dual-stage front airbags; torso-protecting, seat-mounted front side airbags; head-protecting side curtain airbags; tire pressure monitor; and latch-style child seat anchors. The result is at best conservative and at worst awkward and dull. the front end is dominated by a two-bar version of the three-bar, razor-like chrome grille that first appeared on the fusion. The grille is flanked by headlights that wrap around to the sides and follow the curve of the hood toward the windshield. A too-large expanse of bumper is located under the grille and below that is a large air intake that houses fog lights at the corners on the topline ses model. the sides feature a chromed triangular applique at the back of each front fender that simply seems like tacked on ornamentation. This piece, which looks like an f on the driver's side, is the starting point for a pair of character lines that flow back. The bottom line leads to the rear wheelwheel, while the top line rises from front to rear and teams with a high tail to give the focus the appearance of at least some dynamic motion. The rear of the coupe's roofline stays almost as high as the sedan's, which makes it look a bit clunky. The car looks best from the rear, where the simple angular shapes seem to work. the overall result is a look that seems like a poor attempt at a family design statement. interiorinside the ford focus is an aesthetically pleasing cockpit. The dashboard is dominated by a shiny plastic silver inset that covers the middle of the dash and leads into the center console. This is surrounded by black plastic top and bottom. There are no soft-touch materials here, but the graining looks nicer than it did in last year's model. The center console is deep, though not especially wide. on top of the dash is a hooded cutout that displays trip computer, radio, and, when ordered, sync information. The instrument panel has two large gauges, the speedometer and tachometer, and two small gauges, the fuel gauge and water temperature gauge. Along the top are buttons for 10 radio station presets. When sync and sirius satellite radio are ordered, drivers can store up to 60 stations: 20 fm, 10 am and 30 sirius. An easy-to-use set of climate controls is located below the stereo and sync controls. None of these buttons are hard to identify or reach. at the base of the center stack is a nice rubberized tray. This area is fairly important because it is where drivers will keep their phones and ipods when they use the sync system. We found sync to be genuinely useful and fairly easy to use. When an mp3 player is plugged in, sync charges it and has access to the complete playlist. The driver can tell sync to play a specific song, artist, or genre of music from his mp3 player. When a bluetooth-enabled phone is in the car and paired to the system, sync can access its phonebook. It can even play back incoming text messages through the speakers and allow the driver to respond with one of 15 predetermined messages, all while the driver keeps his hands on the wheel. There are a couple glitches, though. I couldn't get the system to recognize 'kirk.' instead it heard my name as 'curt,' which is another number in my cell phone. And in general, the system is a bit tricky to learn at first. the front seats are comfortable, with plenty of head and leg room. Thanks to large mirrors and small rear pillars, the driver's seat affords a good view to all corners. The rear seat has decent room with shorter people up front, but leg room disappears as the seats are moved back for taller front seat occupants. Head room is decent in the sedan, but a bit lacking in the coupe. the trunk is fairly large at 13. 8 cubic feet. That's as big as or bigger than some midsize cars. The second row seats fold mostly flat to allow loading long, flat packages. This focus, though different in appearance, is basically that same car, which means it still handles well. we drove the 2008 focus ses and found a lot of road feel is communicated through the steering wheel. There is little lean in turns; after an initial shift, it takes a nice set. The ses model benefits from the addition of a rear stabilizer bar for sharper handling. We have not driven the base model. good road feel means the ride quality is a bit harder than some might prefer. But the focus isn't a penalty box. With the manual transmission the focus gets an epa-rated 24/35 mpg city/highway. With the automatic, it gets a healthy 24/33mpg. the 2. 0-liter is competitive with most engines in this class. It has decent power for most needs, but passing maneuvers will require plenty of space.

And all models benefit from the availability of electronic stability control for 2009. ford reworked the focus for 2008, giving it new styling inside and out, while maintaining the same platform and basic size. Developed with microsoft, sync provides a hands-free link to cell phones and mp3 players through a series of voice commands. It can even read text messages to occupants through the stereo system. the 2009 ford focus coupe gains a more distinct identity from the sedan with its own front and rear bumper fascias, a dark chrome grille, and fog lights. A roof spoiler and 17-inch dark chrome aluminum wheels come on the focus coupe ses. Focus sedans and coupes with manual transmissions gain a few horsepower (to 143 hp) for 2009; and focus coupe ses automatics get quicker gearing. Yet no loss in fuel economy. inside, the focus is aesthetically pleasing. It looks better than the pre-2008 model, with nicer graining on the plastics that continue to dominate the cockpit. we found the focus handles well. The 2009 coupe adds a bit of blackout trim at the bottom center of the bumper fascia, but if anything this only seems to emphasize the bumper's mass. interiorinside the ford focus is an aesthetically pleasing cockpit. The center console is deep, though not especially wide. on top of the dash is a hooded cutout that displays trip computer, radio, and, when ordered, sync information. The instrument panel has two large gauges, the speedometer and tachometer, and two small gauges, the fuel gauge and water temperature gauge. Along the top are buttons for 10 radio station presets. Or simply hit the steering wheel's voice control button and use voice commands. An easy-to-use set of climate controls is located below the stereo and sync controls. We found these buttons easy to identify and reach. at the base of the center stack is a nice rubberized tray. This area is important because it is where drivers keep phones and ipods when they use the sync system. We found sync to be genuinely useful and fairly easy to use. When an mp3 player is plugged in, sync charges it and has access to the complete playlist. The driver can tell sync to play a specific song, artist, or genre of music from his mp3 player. When a bluetooth-enabled phone is in the car and paired to the system, sync can access its phonebook. It can even play back incoming text messages through the speakers and allow the driver to respond with one of 15 predetermined messages, all while the driver keeps his or her hands on the wheel. Voice commands can be challenging at times, however. And in general, the system is a bit tricky to learn. the front seats are comfortable, with plenty of head and leg room. Thanks to large mirrors and small rear pillars, the driver's seat affords a good view to all corners. The rear seat has decent room with shorter people up front, but leg room disappears as the seats are moved back for taller front seat occupants. Head room is decent in the sedan, but a bit lacking in the coupe. the trunk is fairly large at 13. 8 cubic feet. That's as big as or bigger than some midsize cars. The second row seats fold mostly flat to allow loading long, flat packages. This focus, though different in appearance, is basically that same car

Both instruments are round and easily readable, clearly marked with white numerals on black, though the tach has no redline. the center dash panel is formed by an arc that sweeps upward across the dash to the right side of the car and an inverted parabola. Circular ventilation controls feature the edgy styling with buttons styled to fit the room available. The trunk release, on the left end of the dash, is triangular as well, shaped to fit into the intersection of the arcs outlining the instrument panel. with its asymmetrical design, the interior looks both informal and rich at the same time. Control knobs all have distinctive shapes for easy identification. Rotary controls are rubberized for pleasing soft-touch operation. The steering wheel on the zx5 is leather-covered and satisfying to touch. Even the plastics used on the dash and door panels have a finger-friendly soft-touch feel. Once there, rear-seat riders have lots of legroom, thanks to widely spaced runners under the front seats, plus adult-sized head and shoulder room. Rear-seat air ducts add comfort winter and summer. fold the back seat of the hatchbacks and there's 18. 5 cubic feet of cargo space. Access to this area is easy through the big rear hatch. The versatility of the hatchback design is lost on many americans, who prefer the more formal sedan profile with its conventional trunk, but the hatchback design is hugely popular among europeans for its practicality.
